Despite heavy competition, Apple remains on top of the smartphone world. Its latest flagship, the iPhone 7 Plus, is the best handset the Cupertino-based tech giant has ever produced.
Huawei, meanwhile, is slowly becoming a household name thanks to its consistent quality releases. Despite being in the global market for only a short of period of time, the Chinese company’s latest offering, the Huawei Mate 9, is now considered as one of the best smartphones in the world.
But which flagship can provide better and longer-lasting performance for its users? Let’s see how the iPhone 7 Plus fares against the Huawei Mate 9 in a battery performance showdown.
The iPhone 7 Plus equips a 2,900 mAh non-removable lithium-ion battery that is good enough for up to 21 hours of talk time and 60 hours of music play. The Apple handset can last up to a couple of days with moderate usage. The iPhone 7 Plus lasts longer compared to previous iPhone models thanks to its latest energy-efficient A10 Fusion chipset.
Unfortunately, the iPhone 7 Plus has no wireless charging support. No fast charging feature is also available on the latest Apple flagship. The iPhone 7 Plus can take over three hours to be fully charged from zero.
The Huawei Mate 9, on the other hand, sports a non-removable lithium polymer battery that packs in much more power than the iPhone 7 Plus at 4,000 mAh. While it also can’t be charged wirelessly like the Apple smartphone, the Mate 9 makes up for it with its SuperCharge technology.
Huawei’s new battery feature is able to provide a whole day’s worth of usage in just 20 minutes of charging. It also allows the Mate 9 to prolong battery life and provide over two days of continuous use.
When TechRadar put the iPhone 7 Plus and the Huawei Mate 9 to intensive battery performance tests that involved web browsing, gaming, YouTube playback and native video playback, the Mate 9 won over the iPhone. After 90 minutes of web browsing, the iPhone 7 Plus had 64 percent remaining battery life while the Huawei flagship had 71 percent. Following another 90 minutes of YouTube playback, the Apple handset’s battery level further plunged to 31 percent while the Mate 9 hang on with 47 percent.
The iPhone 7 Plus didn’t even get to finish the third portion of the battle and was totally drained before the 90-minute gaming test was over. The iPhone finished with a total performance time of four hours and 20 minutes. The Huawei Mate 9, meanwhile, had 7 percent remaining power after the gaming test.
The Mate 9 proceeded to last 11 more minutes during the fourth and final test, which was native video playback. The Huawei smartphone endured a total performance time of four hours and 41 minutes before bowing out.
